Reader Comments on 'The Loboc Children's Choir'

Voices, so pure and angelic, burst through the gathering silence and darkness of the tropical evening as thirty children get together for their daily choir rehearsals.... Most evenings are like this in the center of the small town of Loboc, the 'Music Town' of the island Province of Bohol, Philippines -- the home of the Loboc Children's Choir.

My wife and I have just had the unique privilege of seeing the Loboc Children's Choir of Bohol, Philippines perform at the sanctuary of Saint Michael Parish at Paradise Hills,San Diego, CA last Saturday, June 7, 2008. We and many who attended their concert were really mesmerized and awed by their truly angelic voices. It was a beautiful concert! The very best children choir I have ever seen so far. I salute the children, their teacher and conductor, Ma'am Taldo, and their accompanist for presenting such a smorgasboard of excellent music. BRAVO! Well done! Special thanks to the Pilipino-American Cultural Association of San Diego and to all those who worked hard to bring these talented kids to us for our enjoyment. Also, many thanks to Fr. Manny, Pastor of St. Michael Parish for convincing us to not miss this event. Great job!!

Muli, maraming salamat.

sa panalangin mananatili,

Denise Melanie "Lanie" Du Lagrosa

To the parents of these children, I salute you for giving them the freedom to expose off their talents - great job! Let me share this with you:

I am a Lobocana and a music lover. I know i have the voice, it's just that i was being deprived from having this enhanced and developed especially during my childhood years. The reason behind is family - parents never allowed me to join Solfeggio or even to other kids' educational activities. They wanted me to earn not to learn - I used to be reprimanded everytime i'm caught scanning the books as studying must only be done during school hours on school days. In my elementary years at the Loboc central elementary sch., i dreamed of owning a ukelele for me to be able to be with other pupils who served as accompaniment on flag ceremonies but to no avail. I really envied watching them during rehearsals with ma'am Alma Taldo and ma'am Petring Bacquial in preparation for any upcoming competitions. My family never ever realized how much it caused pain to me.

After graduating high school from the PMI Loboc Academy, I had a boyfriend who was a member of the loboc band whom i thought could teach me the basics in music like note reading then to playing musical instruments he used to handle like the sax, trumphet, clarinet, etc. sad to say i was forced to leave the town in search for a better future. Our long distance relationship lasted for almost 9 years though - but was just ruined by several factors and one of which is still family. I've settled down to a fellow Lobocanon who also loves music...unlike my ex, he does not play any instrument but from a family of golden voices. Now that i am already a mother, too, never would i let those bad and sad experiences i had in the past be brought forward by my son as he grows. I truly see in him at his young age that he's got the potentials and i know he will be one of the Loboc children's choir someday. God bless and more power, Loboc!

BOHOL/LCC ARTICLE

Bohol ties with China signed

Bohol captures the limelight as the first RP province which has inked formal agreement with a progressive province in China, thus, gaining recognition from national governments of both countries.

Gov. Erico Aumentado who led a 40-man Bohol delegation held five high-level talks with top Chinese officials led by Jiangxi Gov. Huang Zhiquan who is Jiangxi’s No. 2 citizen.

No less than Chairman Meng Jian Zhu who is a member of the Central Congress signed the agreement of friendly exchange and cooperation which highlighted the six-day visit to China. (Full text of the agreement is printed elsewhere in this issue).

The significance of the sisterhood pact between Jiangxi and Bohol was recognized by Chairman Meng who has to fly home from Beijing just to attend the signing ceremony last Saturday.

The five-year agreement covers areas in tourism, agriculture, trade, science/technology, education, culture and public health.

Jiangxi, which is one of the most progressive provinces in China, is known for its excellence in science and technology making parts of satellites with China being the third successful nation to send satellites in space. She has a population of 43 million.

The most significant outcome of the visit is the selection of Bohol to be the site of a massive TV advertising campaign all over China by Oishi, one of the products produced by Liwayay International Co. Ltd.

Scenic spots like the white sand beaches of Panglao, the Chocolate Hills, man-made forest, Loboc River and centuries-old churches will be highlighted in the TV commercials which will be aired in six major television channels in China, aside from the local channels in Jiangxi. The famous Loboc Children’s Choir will hum the Oishi jingle.

This advertising campaign which will identify Bohol, Philippines as the site of the footages will be viewed by some 1.2 billion Chinese.

With the good exposure of Bohol in China through television, Gov. Aumentado is looking forward for tourists from China on board direct chartered flights once the proposed Panglao International Airport will be completed within the term of Pres. Arroyo.

The China agreement was made possible through the influence of Carlos Chan, chairman of the Liwayway Group who sponsored the trip of the Bohol delegation. Chan who owns 12 plants in various parts of the world is a highly respected Chinese businessman who holds influence in the corridors of power in China. With his endorsement, the Chinese government gave due recognition to the agreement signed between the two provinces.

Chan assured to bring Chinese investors during the Bohol Investment Forum in July during the “Tigum Bol-anon sa Tibook Kalibutan” to be held in the city.

Other concerns:

The Chinese government likewise assured P2.5 million for the establishment of the Loboc Children’s Palace which will soon become the training ground for musicians in the province particularly the famous Loboc Children’s Chior.

Technical assistance on rice production, Jiangxi being China’s top rice producer

Support for geo-textiles from coconut fiber which they use for furniture upholstery

To buy mangoes grown in Bohol including the possible establishment of processing plants here

Showed interest upon learning on the manganese, limestone, silica and fossil oil deposits in the province

Interested on student/teacher exchange program in order to learn English while studying here and Mandarin for those who will study in China

Offered to open sisterhood pact between Tagbilaran City and Jiujiang City

Declaring the Chocolate Hills as a UNESCO Heritage site while seeing the need to replicate what is being developed in Mt. Lushan, Jingaxi’s summer capital where villas for Europeans, Australians and Russians abound on the peak of the 1,400 meters above sea level.

The five-year agreement took effect upon signing and will be renewed upon its expiration.

The agreement mainly aims to promote “understanding and friendship” between the Filipinos and the Chinese through friendly consultations in accordance with the principle of equality and mutual benefit.

The designated liaison offices will be the office of the Bohol governor and the Foreign Affairs and Overseas-Chinese Affairs office of Jiangxi Provincial People’s Government.

Gov. Aumentado immediately upon arrival yesterday afternoon brought the delegation to the Governor’s Mansion for a press conference which was aired live over dyRD.

My first time (and hopefull not the last) to witness the Loboc Children's Choir perform an exceptional show was back sometime in 1998 during the National Youth Environment Summer (YES!) Philippines held in Bohol. It was a short performance, but as what I had witnessed, and as what I had found myself, all the audience in that cultural hall were both enthralled by their voices and their songs and amused by their choreography. LCC is a rare treasure which shouts out loud to the world that our country is never left behind in the field of arts, particularly in music.

Hello Guys, I've been viewing this article for quite a while already and there seemed to be a common inquiry about where to buy your songs. I myself have posted twice in this article about the same inquiry. For the past three years I've been waiting to buy all your songs and I am sure a lot of fans and supporters like me is in the same situation. Is somebody from the LCC organization working on this? I've read Gardy's post about you guys recording your 2nd CD and it will be available soon. I hope it will be sooner and can be purchased online.

Our visit to Loboc Bohol last Dec. 1 was made most memorable by a special performance of the Loboc Children's choir. I, together with my co-workers and our boss, Chairperson Karina Constantino-David, Chair of the Civil Service Commission sat in silence and awe as the choir serenaded us with their songs (only 15 of them attended as it was an impromptu performance during the students' lunch break). I felt like I was being touched by angels. We thank and congratulate the choir and Mrs. Taldo for accommodating us. Your work and discipline is an inspiration. You are a treasure to Bohol and to the rest of the country. Mabuhay!!!

Loboc Choir is endorser of nat'l firm

By MIKE ORTEGA LIGALIG

Bohol’s pride, the world-famous Loboc Children’s Choir has added feather to its cap as it becomes an ad model for an insurance company.

Pioneer, a leading insurance company in the country, has been impressed with the talent of the choir members and believes that the choir group has earned the company’s standard for excellence and discipline.

“Their Discipline Is The Silent Note In Every Song,” says an ad for Pioneer published in the Philippine Star.

The ad shows four members of the choir crooning, and the musical director playing a piano.

Pioneer took note of the group’s unforgettable feat being the gold medalist in the International Folksong Choir Festival held in Barcelona, Spain in 2003.

The full text of the ad says:competition.

Voices pure, angelic and pitch-perfect, they beat 12 adult choirs to become the judges’ unanimous choice.

So how does a choir become the best in the world?

“Discipline and interest,” according to Alma Fernando-Taldo, conductor and musical director. Rigorous practice five days a week. No sweets, no soda, no grade below 70. Period.

“Even the small things matter,” says Ma’am Alma, daughter and granddaughter of respected Loboc musicians.

In September 2003, 30 children from a tiny school in Bohol stunned themselves and the world by earning near-perfect marks in an elite choir.

No surprise then, that for their travels, to guard against costs incurred from missed performances and to reward future triumphs, the children of Loboc are entrusted to Pioneer: a company that shares their discipline to get even the smallest details right.

The ad concludes:

“When you’re thoroughly prepared, hitting the right note is simple. Ask the Loboc children – they get it.”

For the people who's in San Francisco Bay Area, I just entered my Documentary film about the Loboc Children's Choir and hopefully it will be picked and shown during the Asian American Film Festival in March 2006. I'm so glad that I went back to Bohol and made this documentary. Mr. Labad, I wanted to interview you during my filming in Bohol but they said that it's hard to get a hold of you. But I did my best and I think that the movie looks great. Iv'e shown it to some people here and they were all touched by it. Hi to everybody from the choir and Thank You.

In these trying times (as always), our world-class artists like the Loboc Children's Choir give us hope and courage. Yesterday, the Filipino parish here in Bonn also hosted a Filipino singing group, Musicapella, from Imus Cavite, who passed by here, fresh from their choral competition winnings in Poland. Naiyak nga ako when I heard them sing.

These children's talents should have now been documented through a good recording. Moreso, their livelihood could have been more improved through talent fees and royalties that they should be receiving via record sales. Pinoy nga naman... a big SAYANG!!! If these choir is but existing in more developed countries, no doubt... they're big stars and earners now! Come on... don't tell me these kids just want to sing and don't want to earn at the same time...?

Can you please revert?

New CD's should be ready shortly, but are currently only for sale in the Loboc Museum in Loboc, as far as I know. I am working on a way to sell the CD on-line, but this will still require some research--Jeroen.

We had our MASICAP reunion last weekend in Panglao, Bohol. On the second day was the usual tour of the Bohol sites..the well beaten track of Baclayon church..river cruise.choco hills..it was divinely serendipitous that the organizers successfully arranged for a performance of the Loboc Children's choir..an intimate concert at that! at the living room area of the museum... While perfection is an ideal which by its definition should be unachievable; these group seems to have gotten it. or at least are nearest to it...of course they got great harmony...superb repertoire...and overwhelming charm..but i guess two of the things that really makes them great and perfect are the facts that 1. they are not commercial....and more importantly 2.. they really feel and enjoy what they are doing...they love their songs and their singing! it shows in their moves...simple yet elegant...in their facial and bodily expressions which is a paragon of successful expressive minimalism...:) After two songs....a lot of people there were misty eyed.....including the older and the more skeptical and cynical creatures..:) and when they sang when u wish upon a star...boy...it was sublime..divine..splendid! am sure more than a few tears of joy and pleasure were shed on how these "promdi" group is showing to the whole world how to perform. individually..and as a group.. Am proud to be a Boholano indeed, and bask on some reflected glories of this wonderful bunch..and so were the others who were priviliged to be accorded such an intimate performance..proud to be filipinos...proud to be human beings...proud that amidst all these political bickerings...economic uncertainties...juetengs..and the vagaries of phil. life...SOME GEMS DO TRULY EXIST. Indeed Maam Taldo is right.. " as long the the children still sings, therre is hope." The group is indeed not only Loboc or Bohol or the Philippines' treasure; it is a treasure for the whole of humanity..... mabuhay kayu!

I always watch the Living Asia Channel, and one of my documentaries on the Philippines is the documentary on Bohol, where the Lóboc Children's Choir was featured. Does the Lóboc Children's Choir have a new website? It's sad that their website www.lobocchildrenschoir.org no longer exists. I hope the Lóboc Children's Choir will have their own TV advert, probably a Dial Soap advert where they will sing and perform Dial's jingle.

Text me at 09169834425.

Hello dear friends and Jeroen!

On behalf of the Loboc Children's Choir, we would like to thank for all your appreciative and wonderful comments. We are very happy to know we have touched a lot of hearts and minds.

Good news. The tour has helped jumpstart a project in Loboc, and that is the TUBURAN Center for Living Traditions. We opened the only community based music museum in the Philippines , with an exhibit on the rich musical legacy of Loboc and Bohol.

Another good news. The choir has not stopped from working and sharing. Mam Alma Taldo has recruited new children to join the choir because some had to leave. They have chaged voices na. And its so exciting how this new group will develop!

Another another good news. The choir is invited to the INTERNATIONAL WORLD VISION CHILDREN'S CHOIR FESTIVAL in Korea!!!From July 18 to 22, we will perform together with 4 other international children's choirs. All expenses paid for by the organizers!!!!

So you see with all our and your prayers and support and encouragement, things will develop for the choir on the palm of the Almighty.

Thanks again and see you in Bohol!!!!!

Gardy Labad, Damaris Taldo

Great news Gardy! We hope to see you again early next year, when we come to Bohol again.--Jeroen.

Well, I'm a broadcast journalism student at DLSU-dasma. When 1st time i watch the "ANGHEL NG LOBOC" a documentary of I-witness GMA-7, I cannot explain the happiness they bring. This is my first time na makabalita ako ng mga ganitong success lao't bata pa sila.

I am very impressed, I had to show the pictures to my colleage here at the college. I was just there on April 4, 2004 with 14 other family members. We took the boat ride, had fun and pictures with tarsiers and enjoyed the Chocolate Hills and shopping of souvenirs. We tried to visit the Cecilio Putong National High School but it was dark already. The guard let us in. I want to establish a scholarship foundation in my husband's name in that school, named after my great grandfather on my mother's side. Thanks for a beautiful Bohol!

Good day everyone! The loboc Children's Choir is definitely outstanding. We have read from the net that they have beaten adult choirs with a 97 % average score and that's a WOW since seldom do children choirs beat aged ones. Im Mark Anthony Babalcon of the Himig Kabataan of Digos City and Im with my girlfriend, Cherry Lou Tomakin. She sings soprano 1 and I sing tenor 2. Mr. Joyphares Ocio is our conductor and like Nepthali e-mailed, we are the Hall of Famer winner of the RondalSayAwit. It's a choral, choreographic, dance and rondalla competition. We love your group really, Mrs Thelma Bodikey our former conductor let us sing Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, Simbanggabi, May Isang Bulaklak, Sa Mahal kong Bayan and his Lupang Hinirang. Hope you sing it too though you have sung some already. Your outstanding!!!!! LOBOC CHILDREN'S CHOIR ROCKS !!!

Only this time, don't finish the song, besides, whoever would really like the tune would be more happy to buy the CD because they heard a sample music of it and they are craving to listen to it in its entirety.I myself would like to listen to their music, but i would like to hear a sample music first.Guys, what do you think about it?

Corruption is always a difficult issue, as discussions about it often end in name calling and accusations that are little productive in the end. In this, and all aspects, I think it is important to be well-informed, and ask every party involved what is intended and what happened--and that is what I am trying to find out right now.

The keyword in fighting corruption is transparancy, and I would like to invite everybody interested in the subject to visit the website of Transparency International.--Jeroen.

It was such a euphoric experience, one that led me to tears, feeling that these kids could be my sons or daughters. Hi there! I am so happy about the success of the Loboc children's choir. To ma'am Alma Taldo, and ma'am Baby Jala and all others who made it a successful one, two tumbs up for the efforts and dedication that you have contributed to this kind of phenomena. I really appreciate your talent as a music teacher and a conductor and not only that as an academic teacher. I would like to order the Cd's so that I can share it to my future student's someday. I am studying my Masters degree in teaching here in America and I would like to share of what I've learned the American way to my fellow Lobocanon. I hope to see you soon and have a get together to all my elementary teachers and I'm so willing to get your brilliant ideas about teaching. Congratulations and More Power. Keep up the good work and see you soon. Your student, Elvie Inte Calapine

A marvelous experience hearing and seeing this children`choir. I had the pleasure to host 3 girls from the choir from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31. Unfortunately, the time was too short but we had a great time together and I hope they enjoyed their stay here in Essen, Germany. Once again to Angelie, Dianne and Kristle who are still on Tour in Switzerland I hope to hear from you in the near future. And to all the LCC Staff you are indeed doing a great job.

Congratulations to the Loboc Children's Choir!:D

I am interested to buy the cd, but how could we buy one? where in Bohol can we buy?

I don't know yet, but I will ask the choir. You could also contact them on the address given, but now (14 October 2003) they are still touring in Europe.--Jeroen

Our warmest CONGRATULATIONS to all the choir members and LCC staff with their recent success, winning an international grand slam in Barcelona, Spain! You made our town of Loboc, our province, our country, and all the Lobocanons of Southern California sooo proud. We were so thrilled to hear about the news. We wish we could watch any documentary or video during the competition. Please tell us how.

CONGRATULATIONS! for winning the international competition in Barcelona. My family and I are so proud (and happy for you) of you all: the children, Gardy, all LCC staff, Damaris and especially to you my dear friend and high school classmate Alma. I can't get over the fact that you beat the world renown Vienna Boys Choir!

My son Elliot still remembers our Disneyland Tour in '96, you touched so many lives in the USA then but now you've captured Europe and the whole world.

God Bless and enjoy the rest of your trip.

I don't think the Vienna Choir Boys were in the competition; for the rest it is very good news indeed!--Jeroen.

I'm proud to be a Boholano!

That sounds like good news! Waiting for a confirmation and a full update from Damaris.--Jeroen.

I've been in Loboc several years ago, I think the Loboc Children Choir is simply fantastic. I wish I could hear the voice of Damaris Taldo which I believe could be at par with Charlotte Church or Leah Salonga ..TY for the space ..(Greetings from the Garden State, New Jersey)
