Reader Comments on 'Computers for the Philippines'

We've recently started a small project to give old computers a second live in the Philippines. We collect computers, check them, clean and fix them when needed, and then ship them to the Philippines for use in public schools, health organizations, NGO's, and other organizations that serve the public good, and cannot afford to buy computers themselves.

Greetings. I saw your site and would like to inquire. I would like to ask if possible to request computers for our indigent elementary school children. I would like to set up a computer library for the school children of Baculod Elementary School which is located at Barangay Baculod, Alcala, Cagayan. The location is about 14 hours drive from North of Manila. The children of this barangay are seldom expose to computers and would be dis-advantageous to them once they go to high school or college. Please help this school as majority of the children are indigents. Hope and pray that with your good heart, you could help them experience what other children in the world are experiencing. Thanks and God Bless..

Hello I run a technology company, and we have a lot of outdated computer equipment that we no longer need. I am in charge of the online backup services and a few others cloud departments. Our firm usually sends these off to municipal recycling facilities which are sent to unnamed developing countries for use there. I think I can send you valuable computer components like CPU, hard drives, RAM and motherboards, as they are costly but valuable. Other items like large CRT monitors are not energy efficient and cost a lot in carriage, perhaps cost more in shipping than they are worth. Does the school have IT experts on site who can assemble these parts into a working system?

I think the Phillipines has a lot of potential, and is growing rapidly in the technology space, many US and European business outsource their work to smart Phillipine business, and with the growth of cloud computing this will be even more prevalent. Cloud computing the advent of technology like online backup services stands to be a huge advantage as it connects the world closer together.

Good day. My mother has a friend from Mabini, Bohol who would like to supply computers for her hometown. In my business, I have access to several systems. Can you ship computers to a specific township? Your specs show "currently (2006)". This leads me to believe the website hasn't been updated for some time. Are you still providing this service? If not, can anyone please tell me a valid contact for such a venture. Thanks in advance.

I don't know you guys but my advise to you is to have a foundation of organization to support your project. I think we are the first one to install two computer rooms for elementary school in the Philippines. Our website www.nabuenos.org , it is under construction but we will upload our photos soon. Good luck to you guys!

I am very pleased to know there guys like you who take time to help the Filipinos. I wish I know many more guys like you. There are lots of rural elementary and high shools you can help, and I can name some that I know firsthand. Most of them do not have a single computer although some teachers know how to use computers. If some of these schools apply for a computer donation, can you take care of the shipping cost too? Practically all of these schools can hardly afford to buy books and school supplies that I don't think they can bear the costs of shipment. And there is also the problem of customs duties they have to think about. May I also ask if you know of donors of scientific equipment/instruments? Many public research laboratories in the Philippines are so miserably equipped that highly trained technical people just get older and older without their skills being put to much use. No wonder many highly skilled Filipinos prefer to go abroad and remain there. Thank you and may your project last for many many years.

Hallo Jeroen.

I've heard that areas in the Philippines, especially islands such as Bohol and Siquior, the electrical power is not reliable (brown-outs, surges) to support the electrical demands of most computers. It's disheartening to find out that there are excellent computers out there that are just collecting dust because the electrical support is not efficient. Can someone who works in the energy/electrical department in the Philippines make a comment.

Good Work! I was wondering if you know any people, organizations willing to conduct free seminars on use of linux. Personally i want Linux to become popular here so that the windows monopoly be stopped. I think Filipinos are capable of handling this Operating System. I have succesfully installed Linux OS but dont know a thing on how to troubleshoot it on a network. and besides we would like to offer LINUX to be used in our computer literacy program here in Malabon City in the Philippines.

I just am very scared you may use them for other purposes that ultimately contradict wholesome thinking, like supporting the communists. Am just worried. Just don't.

More than initials would be appreciated... I don't see why you need to be afraid of that. I will be quite open in who will get what on this website, and will try to stay as neutral as possible in political issues, apart from that I expect recipients to put them to use in a way that is constructive to society as a whole, and I require them to be non-discriminatory and non-violent. If you're thinking about the NPA and affiliated organisations: I will not support them, since I don't believe their actions are in any way constructive to the development of Bohol.--Jeroen.
