Does anybody know when the last dated coin the F7.0 counterstamp was used?I know there are two different F.II, what were the beginning/ending dates these were used? and when did they stop using counter strikes? I see the different counter stamps on the same date coins. Where were these coins counter struck, in country of origin (Mexico, Peru, etc.) or in the Philippines?

I have a cased set of these Alphonso XII 4 pesos gold coins dated from 1880 to 1885 - (six coins). Each weighs Approx 6.45grms. Under the head we have 915/000, on the reverse above the crown, 100 905 I have a suspicion that they are commemorative; however, they must be very rare because only a hundred sets were made. Mine is No 18. I have photos if reqd. Regards, CB

I have 3 coins that say (Tails) ESPNA S. & Upside down is a B with an A in caps but half the size of the B & with a period under it. Then, REYNA DE LAS (Heads) ISABEL /WITH A 2 &A, again half size with a period under the A. The POR LA G.DE DIOS Y LA CONST- Under the head is the date:1855. At the back of her head is "4" In front of the head is a M with a dot instead of a dash The other 2 are both : 1845 & both are the same print as the 1855 but the stamp on both are miss stamps. Or they are driffing of the side of both coins. All 3 are copper. I'm assuming that they were used here in the Pilippines but don't have Flippins on the coins.

I have an old five peso bill series of 1916 signed by president concepcion... how much is the cost of it? please email to me at ibi_angeles@yahoo.com

Nobody can establish the value of a collectible without seeing it first. Consulting Krause World paper Money (1994), where this is Cat.# 44b, the listed value is USD 1.50 for a "Good" (Where good means "well worn and heavily used", basically an ugly note) to USD 15 for "Extremely Fine", (which means very attractive with at most three light folds, and clean and bright paper, and only very slightly rounded edges). Now this catalog is already 15 years old. Pity you don't have Cat.# 44a, with the Willis signature, which is far more expensive.--Jeroen.

Great article...to shed lights to some of the questions... 1882 Alfonso 4 peso coin ranges from 2,000 US dollars or more... A sagrado verdadero un peso silver coin is the so-called anting-anting coins used by some religious sects during early 1900's though they were dated 1101, cost is about 2,000 pesos or more

I value these preciuos gold coins from Spanish Colonization era, they are really beautifull piece of atique gold coins. I owned 8pcs of 4P 1861-68 2 pcs of rare 1866 & 67 and sold it to diffrent antique shop in -Mabini-Ermita for total of PhP40,000 on 2001. I asked my mother to have it and was granted she didn't know it's gone but won't be a big deal to her, it was just an "aras" of Grand Parents wedding! I really regret so much after I realized what i just did right after i sold it, I should treasure the wedding things from the ancestors. I hope they will forgive me, money was the whole reason but I promise to myself to buy a set in the future, I'm living now here in California from time to time triyng to find to buy the same thing as mint as the one I lost.(if u can help me) But I believe if the Grand Mother is living that time she'll be happy to know that I used the accumulated money during the time I needed it most. Thanks for reading my sad and a little funny story. Have a great day.

We were once killing time in a mall in Manila. While the rest of the group went window shopping for shoes and bags, I went to the antique shops in the third floor and looked for anything interesting which I can probably afford. You bet, old coins and notes! The oldest that I bought was one Queen Isabella silver 1868.Thank you for the information you featured about it. Although it is not very rare, I most cherish it because to me it is one piece that could have been held by the country's great. I think I would start collecting old coins.

Can anybody tell me how much would i be able to sell this for? The jeweler who made the bracelet offered 150,000 for this way back year 2000. I hope its value has gone higher now.

It might, I cannot tell. However, for coin collectors, coins that have been placed in bracelet often loose considerable value, as they are damaged in the process.--Jeroen.

Collecting coin is treasure hunting. It is full of adventure, happy and sad moment. If you get a coin in cheaper amount and after that you find out that it is expensive price, or you get a coin for free; that is your happy and success in hunting. But if you buy a coin in expensive price and then you find out that it is a fake, less price and in bad condition; that is your sad and failure in hunting. Make a proper plan, research, study, understanding, and examine before you purchase an expensive coin. Considered also its potential appreciation you can get when you have that item. For me, “SPANISH-PHILIPPINES COINS” are considered as “Asian Treasure” in this time, it is a collector’s item and hard to find. My father is not a success treasure hunter and I see all his sad moment. Having my collection and owning a lot of collector’s item, I can show to him that his success is in his hand.

It is made of copper and says "Reina de las Españas, Isabel 2 Por la Gracia de Dios y la Const., The denomination is " UN Cu" and " 25 Cent de Real. It has the face of a woman facing right and in the back it seems like the Spanish Escudo for this queen , a crown in the top and sorrounded by some leaves. Can someone tell me if World Treasures at Megamall will accept returns in coins. The old man seems very rude and arrogant when a potential buyer seeks to ask questions about his items. Also I notice that most of his coins are placed in holders where it is difficult to grade the true condition of the coins surfaces. The coins appear frosty at first then upon removal from the holders you finally end up with an altered/scratched/whizzed coin.

Whenever you buy coins, you should observe them closely. If they are kept in holders, and you are not allowed to open them to see the coin directly, you should not buy them. My interaction with rude and arrogant sales people is typically very short.--Jeroen.

Please be very careful in your www.ebay.ph coin dealings. Since Ebay Philippines is new and does not yet require credit card information, some scammers have flocked the place. be careful of ebay sellers such as :

Leahrsy (ace debatian) - fake coins, he collects rare coin pictures from the net and posts them on his aution. the coins you will receive of course will be different.

Philippine_badjao - same as leahrsy, his pictures are collected from the net, then sends you a fake gold plated coin.

I hope ebay Philippines become more strict in its membership so that the local numismatic community's image would no longer be stained by these scammers :(

I want to know the value/price of my coin: Gold "1864 Isabel 2 por la g. De dios y la Const. Reina de las Espanas 4P. Filipinas"

I am not a coin valuation service, and nobody can say anything on the price of a coin without seeing it, and preferably holding it in his hands. The price of a coin is determined by the force of supply and demand, and depends much on its condition (grade) -- coins in fine condition are worth much more than those worn out. Note that the term 'Good' in grading coins means something different from what common sense dictates. If you want to get some idea, look at ebay for similar coins, and check prices here. If you want to sell, take some pictures of your coin, or even better, have it professionally graded, and then offer it for sale on ebay or another large auction site. Please don't ask me for prices of coins.--Jeroen.

The first official coinage of the Philippines is called Barrilla (root word of the modern Filipino word "barya" or "loose change"). It was officially issued in 1766 with the inscription "Ciudad de Man" (City of Manila), with the spanish coat of arms and lion holding gloves with monogram "BA". It is made of copper and as big as the modern 25 sentimos coin. Before that, many believed that the earlier gold Piloncito was used, but numismatically it is not an official issue of a nation. Before 1766 Barilla came into being, a coin made of lead and as big as the modern one piso or five piso coins with the same monogram "BA" was believed by many collectors as "Barilla" that was used as "money" before 1766, but there is no proof that it was indeed an official issue, and viewed only by experts as "weight", meaning a scale to measure the weight of silver and gold.

Just a complimentary note. "LAS ESPAÑAS" in that 1888 coins speak of Spain and what's left of her overseas territories. Cuba, Puerto Rico, Filipinas, España. My point is to share with you HOW MUCH DID SPAIN LOVE ITS CHILDREN COLONIES. She devoted over 300 years of her own blood and children to raise her offsprings, and in the end she's the one counter-colonized by all us former Spanish colonies. "Las Españas" speaks of a reformed Spain, already in 1888, who's learned from a deep wound caused by her american children abandoning her when she most needs them (Napoleon threatening to really conquest the whole Spain). Spain is no longer "one" isolated carrier of her heritage... She has come to realize approximately after 1830 that the cultures guarded under the HISPANIC umbrella, Filipinos and Hispanicamericans, are now as Hispanic as her and she is but ONE of us. Email me your comments.

Who the hell cares about these coins? The Spanish era was YEARS AGO! It was a tragic time in Philippine history that should be forgotten. Things that makes me remember those times, like these stupid coins, just makes me very angry. I still remember when I was beaten up by the Guardia Civil because I did not bow when I came across them on the street. I felt I was victimized and beaten again when I read this article.

Those who forget their history are bound to repeat it. Read "Noli Me Tangere" (again?), and try to establish how much of it still rings true today!--Jeroen
